No doubt you're aware, if you're considering relocating to Markham, Ontario, that it will be impossible to support yourself in the city without a job unless you have recently won several million dollars in the lottery. Therefore, if you've already made arrangements to take a position at a Markham firm, you're set. The rest of you had better get cracking if you don't want to find yourself under donated bedding in Toronto's homeless shelters because your house got foreclosed. Don't worry though; there are plenty of jobs in the Greater Toronto Area. Here are some of the biggest sectors.
Finance and Government
Many people who live in Markham commute into downtown Toronto daily to work at a financial firm or government office. While Toronto isn't the national capitol, a large amount of provincial government work goes on there along with major class action Ontario lawsuits. The Toronto Stock Exchange and the banks, insurance providers, and investment firms that feed off of it employ a range of people from mailroom clerks to financial planners.
Education and Health Care
Teaching and taking care of people are two of the biggest job sectors across the GTA. Not only are there millions of school kids who need teaching, there are multiple post-secondary institutes from the giant University of Toronto to small Mohawk College that need educators. There are several hospitals in Toronto, including Sick Kids, one in each major suburb city, and hundreds of clinics. Working in them pays better than writing for a free Riverdale blog, and you often get great government benefits.
Skilled Trades
In the 1970s, manufacturing was one of Toronto's biggest job sectors. Now the manufacturing industry has moved out into the suburb cities like Markham and Mississauga where the land taxes are lower. Additionally, construction workers will always be needed to put up new homes, offices, and halls for wedding rental. Brantford, one of the smallest of the suburbs, even has opportunities in these areas, because like all the others, it too is growing.
The Arts
This job sector is almost unique in Canada. The only city that can rival Toronto in terms of opportunities for actors, musicians, and filmmakers is Vancouver. You don't have to be a playwright or a concert pianist to take part. If you have ambitions as a wedding videographer, Toronto talent agent, location scout, or other behind-the-scenes film professional, there are opportunities here for you as well. Filming locations are generally spread throughout the GTA with the major studios in Toronto.
